Job Description:

This position functions as a project biologist conducting freshwater fisheries research and monitoring throughout the state with a focus on the Harris Chain of Lakes in central Florida.
We are seeking to hire a motivated biologist to join a research team that provides information to local and statewide fisheries managers.
Incumbent will be responsible for the collection, analysis and reporting of biological and limnological data.

Duties and
Responsibilities:

  • Biologist will assist in collection, evaluation and documentation of fisheries and physical and chemical data for a statewide long-term monitoring program using electrofishing, trawls, and roving creel surveys.
  • Work will also include data entry, analysis, report writing, and processing samples in the laboratory (e.
    g.
    , otoliths, diets).
  • Successful candidates will assist project biologists with ongoing research, such as largemouth bass stocking evaluations, studies evaluating sportfish regulation changes, bass tournament release mortality, fish attractor research, trophy bass radio telemetry, habitat enhancement evaluations, and plant management/water quality investigations.
  • This position will be expected t to propose and lead research studies that result in manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations at professional or public meetings.
  • Expected to build professional relationships with fisheries managers and researchers to expand and enhance interdisciplinary knowledge.
  • Coordinate and perform maintenance and repair of field and lab equipment.
  • Assist with training and supervision of seasonal technicians and volunteers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skill(s), and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Florida s freshwater fisheries, fish population dynamics, and fish management techniques.
  • Knowledge of freshwater aquatic plants and related management techniques.
  • Knowledge of research study design for fisheries applications.
  • Knowledge of data analysis techniques relevant to fisheries biology.
  • Skill in the use of scientific laboratory and field equipment.
  • Skill at oral and written communication including both technical and popular outreach.
  • Skill in the safe operation of vehicles, boats, outboard motors, trailers, etc.
  • Skill in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, data analysis, fish population analysis programs.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to perform quantitative analysis of fisheries data.
  • Ability to operate independently to achieve project objectives.
  • Ability to design and complete biological studies/surveys.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences.
